Urban Amplified is here to make shopping for new music easy and to engage people with music they might not know, but would love.
If you've spent some time in our Urban Outfitters stores in Europe and the USA, you'll have seen and heard the type of music we get behind - music that doesn't always get the support it deserves, is hard to find if you don’t know what it is, and generally doesn’t reach everyone's ears.
Online, we continue that ethos, with a refined, carefully selected range of music that comes from small independent record labels to the big majors. We don’t believe that you need 10 million tracks to choose from, but that a lower number of higher quality pieces of music is much more exciting – and let’s not forget that it’s supposed to be fun.
To help you make your way around the site we have four simple colour coded genres:
Guitars is everything from punk to nu-folk, rock to indie
Dance is electronica, house, breaks and everything in between
Urban is beats, hip-hop, funk, soul and disco
Chillout is exactly what it says on the tin. Chilled-out tracks, world music, folk and anything downtempo
You’ll also find personal recommendations for all the music and a limited range of product that is tailored specifically by our team of music specialists. You hear the word “underground” bandied around when people reflect on some of the music you may find on the site but it’s really about cutting-edge music, old and new, sitting alongside classic albums and music that deserves recognition.
Search
You can use our great search facility to find anything we've made available to you through the service. We'll also try and recommend a number of other similar artists based on what you are looking for. This way you can discover lots of great music both new and old. As well as artist name, you can search by record label, album title and even search our reviews for a particular style or feel.
Quality
The sound you buy varies greatly from store to store. Most other download sites sell music at 128kbps which, when you play on anything louder than a phone, sounds quite poor. All the music you’ll find on Urban Amplified is supplied at a minimum 192kbps - which is much better - or 320kbps which is CD quality. Some products are available as WAVs and are the best quality but tend to be used by DJs to play on big club systems. It's important to note that a higher quality format will take slightly longer to download than its inferior counterpart.
Technical
Our downloads are DRM-free which means you can play them on all of the devices you use to listen to music. 'Digital Rights Management’ is essentially software that some of the major record labels use and to make sure people don't make endless digital copies of their music. In other words, if you buy a WMA, you are allowed to make copies of it but only a specific number of times. Unfortunately this limits the way in which you can use the music you buy and so, although we support efforts to reduce piracy, it is clear that you should be able to decide what you play your download on.
Legal Vs Illegal
Piracy is illegal. Sometimes it can even cause you problems with your equipment but legal downloading is secure, easy and by far the most important thing is that you know that the person that made the music that you're enjoying will receive their just rewards.
